January Event: Faythe Levine and Handmade Nation

The Rise of DIY, Art, Craft, and Design

Breaking from our traditional lecture format, our next event will be a screening of Faythe Levine’s Handmade Nation. The film follows Levine as she logs 19,000 miles across the U.S., documenting the DIY arts, crafts and design movement.

Following the 65-minute film, Levine will lead a Q&A on the film, her upcoming projects and other work.

Faythe Levine profiles the knitters, embroiderers, printmakers, and latch hookers who have taken crafting out of your grandma’s sitting room and propelled it into the cultural spotlight. Handmade Nation (and a companion book of the same name) offers a colorful survey of the DIY art scene.

Buying local for many means buying handmade objects that are designed and fabricated with ingenuity, grit and love. Handmade Nation documents a movement of artists, crafters and designers that imbue traditional handiwork techniques with a punky do-it-yourself ethos informed by modern aesthetics, politics, feminism and art. The film explores the burgeoning art community of indie crafters that is fueled by creativity, determination and networking.
