MAURlowFlorian Maurer is a principal and sole proprietor of Florian Maurer Architects.  He practices architecture in Naramata, British Columbia and Lana, Italy.

His previous firm – Florian Maurer Ltd. of Whitehorse, Yukon, now Kobayashi Zedda Architects Ltd. – has received national awards for their work with Yukon First Nations and sustainable design. His house in Naramata has received numerous awards including a BC Wood Works Award, a 2005 Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Architecture and a 2005 North American Wood Award.

He has designed many buildings in isolated communities and harsh climates. His designs are adapted to the conditions of Canada’s North, and provide an alternative to generic imports from the south.

He began his career as a homesteader in the Canadian bush and believes that buildings must respond directly and clearly to function, climate and surroundings – but must also bring joy.
