Autumn 2018 Update

As the daylight dwindles and the snows fall across Alaska, our minds turn to plans for the coming winter. Many of you, as our long time collaborators and supporters, are accustomed to seeing the ADF lecture series start in the fall but things are a little different this year. The grant cycle of our major grantor, the National Endowment of the Arts, has shifted to the calendar year so we are shifting our programming with it.

The good news is, despite the granting gap, ADF is not dormant; we have been and continue to be active! Here is an outline of our recent and upcoming programming for this autumn:

Up and Coming in December

Look for more details on the December programming in coming weeks.

2019 Lecture Series

Our 2019 Lecture Series, Polar Shift, will be announced in December. The series will be organized to span the calendar year with lectures between January-April and October-December.  We have a stellar lineup in the works that I can’t wait to share with you!

As always, small Alaskan organizations like ADF are nothing without our community: our audience, our collaborators, and our sponsors. Thanks for all that you do to further the dialog of design in Alaska by supporting ADF.

Recent Programming in September: Anchorage Design Week

  • Design Org Mixer – ADF co-organized this gathering with sister organizations ASID, AIGA and AIA to allow cross-collaboration between groups with a similar design focus.
  • Modern Home Bike Tour– A curated series of three private residences was showcased with architects and owners sharing the design and construction process. The event was so popular the weekday event sold out 24 hours before departure!
  • Housing Symposium v2.0 – Continuing our discussion from last year v1.0, a group comprising a local architect, builder, planner, data specialist and visualization designer discussed issues and opportunities around the topic of Accessory Dwelling Units. Collaborating with the Municipality of Anchorage, this project also accompanied an ADU data visualization presentation.
  • Emerging Designer Showcase – Collaborating with AIGA and the Anchorage Museum, we highlighted and celebrated the works for local architects and designers from their early career stages.  This showcase was up for the public during Design Week at the Anchorage Museum. Thank you for those that participated!
  • Minecraft Build Battle – Set up as a fun design challenge for kids, the build battle was live in the Anchorage Museum atrium on big screens. Participants had 15 minutes to respond to the design challenge “Treehouse”.
  • Pecha Kucha Night v4 – For the continuation of this high-energy series of short presentations, 10 Alaskans shared diverse work and ideas to a packed house at the Anchorage Museum.

Best Regards,
Garrett Burtner, ADF Board President
