Matthew Burtner (http://www.matthewburtner.com) is an Alaskan-born composer, sound artist and eco-acoustician whose music and research explores embodiment, ecology, polytemporality and noise. First Prize winner of the Musica Nova International competition and an IDEA Award winner, Burtner’s music also received honors and prizes from the Bourges (France), Gaudeamus (Netherlands), Darmstadt (Germany) and The Russolo (Italy) international competitions. His compositions have been performed in festivals and venues throughout the world, and commissioned by ensembles such as NOISE (USA), Integrales (Germany), Peak FreQuency (USA), MiN (Norway), Musikene (Spain), Spiza (Greece), CrossSound (Alaska), and others. He is the composer of several large-scale environmental, intermedia artworks including the climate change opera, Auksalaq.
Matthew Burtner is Professor of Composition and Computer Technologies (CCT) in the Music Department at the University of Virginia, and Director of the environmental arts non-profit organization, EcoSono (www.ecosono.org). At UVA he also co-Directs the Coastal Futures Conservatory.
On the occasion of the Parma Records release of Matthew’s “Glacier Music” album (Ravello/Naxos), this presentation tour for Alaska Design Forum features a discussion and interactive demonstration of Matthew’s approach to ecoacoustics across a wide range of environmental systems, including Alaskan glacial dynamics, Guatemalan lava floes, and sound casting of a cathedral in Venice, Italy. Matthew and his brother Garrett, Alaskan architect and clarinetist, will also perform “A’aa” for lava, instruments and ecoacoustics.
